“Photography in Ireland During the Nineteenth Century”

David Davison one of Ireland's best-known commercial photographers

Date: Tuesday, 06th December, 2005

Time: 18.00h for 18.30h
Location: Room 2-046, DIT Aungier Street

Photography in 19th century Ireland has received little scholarly attention to date, despite its role in the histories of Irish science and technology, and the broader field of visual culture.

The early years of photographic invention give rise to claim and counter-claim but Ireland's contribution is seldom considered. Similarly the achievements, both technical and artistic, of Irish photographers have been either subsumed into the history of our larger neighbour or completely ignored.

This illustrated lecture by David Davison, one of Ireland's best-known commercial photographers, will give an overview of photography in Ireland during the nineteenth century and the contribution of Irish workers to the advancement of this culturally and economically important art/science that has changed the way in which we all live.
